| Overview |
Amaryllis bulbs produce wonderful indoor
plants that have large trumpet shaped flowers.
They come in shades of red, white, green,
apricot and pink. Heights range from 12 to
36 inches. The bulbs can be planted in pots;
amaryllis also make beautiful, long lasting
cut flowers. If properly treated, they will
rebloom year after year. The following should
be considered when buying amaryllis bulbs:
- Decide what color you want. Red and white
are traditional during the winter holiday
season. Pink and apricot light up a room
in the late winter.
- Consider the size. Miniature amaryllis produce
numerous blooms. The larger
varieties make
a spectacular statement.
- Make sure all bulbs are dry and firm.
Plant amaryllis bulbs from October
through
April for bloom in 6 to 12 weeks.
Cover ½
of the bulb with soil, leaving
½ of the bulb
and its neck exposed. Water sparingly
until
a bud forms. Taller varieties
may need to
be staked. |
