Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums add beauty to the garden from
the late summer to after many other plants
have been killed by the first frost. They
come in a wide range of colors and sizes.
Mums can be grown in the flower bed where
they can be accents or mass planted for a
spectacular effect. They also make sensational
container plants. Perennial mums will come
back for several years. Annual types can
be grown indoors or out for one season only.
They make wonderful gifts.
The following should be considered
when buying
mums:
- Look for healthy green leaves and barely
opened buds. Avoid those with yellow leaves.
Fully opened flowers will not last as long.
- Hardy garden mums should have vigorous roots.
Mulch them in more northern climates to encourage
winter survival.
Mums need to be planted in well drained soil
in sunny locations. Plant them 18 to 24 inches
apart. The tops of the plants should be pinched
back twice before the middle of July to produce
bushy growth. Water well when the mums are
in bloom. |
