| Overview |
Gardenias are evergreen shrubs with beautiful
glossy green leathery leaves and 2 to 4 inch
waxy, fragrant white flowers. They can grow
up to 6 feet high and wide when they are
planted outdoors in areas that rarely experience
frost. Gardenias can be used as single specimens
or planted in groups. They also make wonderful
container houseplants. Gardenias are excellent
winter time gifts.
The following should be considered
when buying
gardenias:
- Look for healthy, dark green leaves and vigorous
shallow roots.
- Know how much sun to plant in. Gardenias
need partial shade in very
hot places but
prefer more sun in cooler areas.
- Gardenias like moist, acidic soil that has
been enriched with organic matter such as
peat moss. They need to be fertilized during
the growing season.
Remember to plant gardenias near outdoor
seating areas and walkways to enjoy their
heavenly scent. |
