Garden Lighting
One of the hottest trends in gardening is
lighting things up at night.
Whether sitting
outside or viewing trees and
plants from
the inside, lighting can add
drama to the
night yard and allow owners more
time to
enjoy the landscape (a real bonus
for those
who work during the day). Outdoor
lighting
can also add safety and security
to any property.
The following should be considered
when buying
lighting for the garden:
- Consider whether you want to do your own
lighting or hire a professional. Simple outdoor
fixtures are easy and inexpensive to install,
but more complex systems, especially involving
lights in high places, may be beyond the
capabilities of some do-it-yourselfers.
- Garden lighting will be more convenient if
it can be turned on indoors.
Some lights
work with automatic timers.
- Motion sensitive lights can be used for walkways
and driveways for security. These allow for
brighter lights that will turn themselves
on and off.
- Some systems allow highlighting select garden
features while muting others. The more individual
lighting units installed, the more dramatic
the look that can be achieved.
Do not to go overboard with nighttime garden
lighting. The desired effect is subtle, not
harsh brightness that will not only annoy
the neighbors but disturb desirable wildlife
such as birds. It should still be nighttime
in your garden. |
