| Overview |
Orchids are a large family of plants grown
for their beautiful tropical flowers, which
come in many colors and sizes. The plants
themselves range from miniature to giant
20 foot varieties. Orchids often bloom for
a long time. Phalaenopsis types usually last
up to 4 months. Previously very expensive,
new growing methods have resulted in very
reasonable prices. They make wonderful gifts,
as they add drama to any room.
The following should be considered
when buying
orchids:
- Look for healthy looking leaves and unopened
buds (to maximize bloom time.)
- Know the light requirement for the type of
orchid you wish to grow.
- Most orchids are not grown in soil, but tree
bark, pebbles or crumbled charcoal.
Containers
often have air holes.
- Water most orchids by drenching them and
allowing the water to thoroughly
drain.
- Do not place orchids too close to heating
or air conditioning vents,
but do put them
in a place where air can circulate
around
them. Make sure to protect
orchids if transporting
them in cold weather.
