| Overview |
Poinsettias are the most traditional and
popular plants for Christmas. The flowers
of these plants are actually the small yellow
ones in the center of the large, colorful
leaves (called bracts.) Poinsettias come
in many sizes and colors including red, pink,
white and yellow. There are many types of
newer variegated varieties. They make wonderful
gifts.
The following should be considered
when buying
poinsettias:
- Look for dark green leaves down to the soil
line; do not purchase those with yellow leaves
or leaves that easily fall off.
- The soil should be moist but not wet. The
plants should not droop or
wilt.
- Choose plants that have completely colored
bracts; avoid those that have
a lot of green
around the edges.
- The plant should look attractive from all
sides. Poinsettias that have
been crowded
together often suffer premature
bract loss.
Make sure to protect the poinsettia when
transporting it in cold weather (below 50
degrees F.) Place it in a sunny window away
from heating and air conditioning vents. |
