Cold and Flu Remedies
|
 |
Unlike bacterial-based illnesses, which can
be treated or knocked out by prescription
drugs, colds and flus are caused by viruses
and you pretty much have to let them run
their course. Note that flu (especially virulent
strains like bird flu) can be life-threatening,
so always seek medical attention when necessary.
If you get a cold or flu, here are some tips
that can help you minimize the effects of
the headache, runny nose, cough, and body
aches that accompany it:
- There are a host of over-the-counter and
prescription drugs available to treat cold
and flu symptoms. Be sure you read the labels
for proper dosage information (it can differ
based on age) and that you are taking the
right medication for your symptoms. For instance,
if you only have a runny nose, taking an
all-in-one remedy that relieves other symptoms
may give you unnecessary side effects, such
as making you drowsy.
- Sometimes, the remedies which you take to
prevent colds can also help
you get over
them quickly. Much has been
written about
Echinacea, a natural herb that
alledgedly
boosts the immune system.
- Don't forget your body's need for nutrition
when you are sick and don't feel like eating.
Fruits and vegetables, especially those providing
vitamin C, can help give your body the resources
it needs to fight the cold and flu virus.
Drining plenty of liquids helps flush out
your system more quickly, ushering out the
viruses and bacteria.
- Warmed wraps and heating pads can give relief
to body aches, and vaporizors
at night can
keep your nasal linings from
drying out.
Natural remedies may have fewer
side affects
than over-the-counter or presciption
medicines
but are not regulated by any
medical authority
and therefore require research
on your part
to determine whether they are
right for
you. Their effectiveness is largely untested,
but a very broad base of user experience
gives you some indication of their safety
and effectiveness. In general, natural remedies
concentrate on keeping your immune system
strong, or if you are sick, addressing a
specific symptom. |
