Unwanted Hair Removal
One of the most popular cosmetic procedures
done today, for both men and women, is the
removal of unwanted hair from the face, chest,
legs and other body parts. With the variety
of methods available, it can be difficult
to decide which method to use but it should
be reasonable in cost, with no or minimum
discomfort, kind to the skin, and convenient.
Here are some methods to consider
when making
your choice:
- Temporary hair removal: Depilatories, tweezing,
waxing, and shaving are among the many ways
to temporarily remove hair. These methods
are widely available, easy to do yourself,
and inexpensive, but the procedure must be
repeated frequently, if not daily. Although
they don’t have much risk of scarring, they
can be messy, time consuming, and irritating
to your skin. Waxing and tweezing could also
be painful.
- Permanent hair removal: Generally considered
permanent, but sometimes need
repeating,
are the options of prescription
treatments,
electrolysis, and laser treatments.
- Prescription options include oral and topical
medicines to reduce and/or
stop hair growth.
These require time to be
effective and medical
supervision.
- Electrolysis uses an electric current to
kill the hair roots. Done
by a professional,
it is best used on small
areas like the upper
lip or eyebrow. It can be
expensive since
several visits may be needed
and some people
find this method to be painful.
Look for
an electrologist with the
proper credentials/licenses
to do this type of work.
- Laser removal uses a laser to stop hair growth
in the hair follicle. Large areas can be
treated at the same time reducing the number
of visits needed but it still can be expensive.
Originally working best on people with light
skin and dark hair, newer lasers are available
to treat a variety of skin types and hair
colors. Check with the facility for their
recommendation on the effectiveness of the
treatment for you.
As with electrolysis, check the qualifications
of the facility to do laser treatments.
