Microdermabrasion Facial Treatments
Microdermabrasion facial treatments are used
to help freshen facial skin that has been
damaged by acne, the sun, or from aging, resulting in a
healthier, glowing appearance. They can reduce
wrinkles and blemishes and even out pigmentation.
Because microderabrasion stimulates the production
of skin cells and collagen, the skin has
a more youthful look after treatment.
Most microdermabrasions are preformed for
cosmetic reasons. A fine sandblasting device
sprays tiny aluminum oxide crystals across
the face at high pressure in a process that
mixes gentle abrasion with suction to remove
the dead outer layers of the skin. The process
takes 30 minutes to an hour. No anesthetics
are necessary, and there are no resulting
side effects other then some temporary skin
redness. Microdermabrasions can be done on
a “lunchtime” basis, as all normal activities
can be immediately resumed. It may take up
to 5 to 12 treatments spaced 2 to 3 weeks
apart to obtain the best results. Repeat
treatments will be periodically required
to maintain the effects of microdermabrasion.
The process can be performed on all skin
types and colors.
Most microdermabrasions are preformed by
professionals who have been specially trained
to do them. Recently, cosmetic companies
have introduced inexpensive at home kits
that use a battery operated scrubber and
thick, gritty creams to achieve a milder
abrasive result. These kits do not include
the suction element of the treatment. You
should read and follow all directions.
Care should be taken to use sunblocking products
to protect your skin after any type of microdermabrasion
process.
