Food Containers
Food storage containers are essential in
a well equipped kitchen. Leftovers can be
kept for future meals and quickly reheated
in the microwave or oven. The most practical
containers are either plastic or glass and
should have their own lids. Clear containers
allow you to what is in them. This helps
cut down on spoilage. Some come in nesting
sets; these are often the best value as they
take up less cabinet space while waiting
to be used.
Containers can be purchased on
line or through
catalogs. They are easy and inexpensive
to
ship. The following should be
considered
when buying food storage containers:
- Buy food storage containers in a variety
of sizes so you can efficiently store various
portions. Too many large sizes will take
up too much room in your refrigerator. Containers
are more efficient if they can be stacked.
- Plastic containers can be used in the refrigerator
and freezer. Most are suitable for the microwave,
but check to make sure they are dishwasher
safe. Some plastic containers are soft; the
harder varieties are usually more stain resistant.
One type of plastic container collapses for
less bulky storage. Rubbermaid makes a selection
of containers in all shapes and sizes.
- Glass storage containers can cost more than
plastic, but they often last longer and can
go in the dishwasher. Glass will not stain
as easily as plastic, nor will it pick up
food odors. Most glass containers can be
used in the refrigerator, freezer, and microwave.
Some can go from the freezer directly into
the oven. Glass containers are also more
attractive than plastic and so are more acceptable
for use on the table. However, glass is easier
to break. Lids for glass containers are usually
made of plastic or stainless steel. Some
have rubber gaskets that create a vacuum
seal.
Remember to look for containers that are
air tight and securely store liquids even
if tipped over. |
