Acrylic Tub / Shower Kits
If your existing bath area is looking old
and tired, you can replace it by installing
an acrylic tub/shower kit. These units usually
consist of a tub plus three surrounding panels
that all interlock and seal to create a water
tight unit. Acrylic is easy to keep clean,
as it wipes off quickly. It also has few
joints to harbor mold, dirt or soap scum.
The tub and panels are light enough for one
person to lift, so there are no costly labor
charges to install them.
If you are thinking of replacing
your current
tub area with acrylic, consider
the following:
- Start by measuring the length and width of
your existing bathtub; then allow 3/4 of
an inch extra at each wall. This should give
you a measurement that is close to a standard
tub size, and you will know which tub to
buy. The panels should fit the tub measurement.
- Avoid trying to install one piece shower
surrounds and one piece tub/shower stalls
when remodeling. They are usually too bulky
to get through an existing bathroom door.
- You will also need a new drain, overflow
assembly, and clear silicone kitchen/bath
caulk. Consider also replacing the old shower
valve, shower head, and shower arm at the
same time.
An experienced do-it-yourselfer should be
able to complete this project, including
demolition of the old tub area, in one full
weekend.
