Wood Fences
Wood fences appear throughout the country.
They can provide privacy, decoration, containment,
and/or separation. The two popular styles
of wood fences are picket and split rail,
although there are many variation of these
as well as others such as a basket weave
or panel fence. Which style you choose is
a matter of taste and (if applicable) local
zoning laws.
Wood fences can be bought in pre-made sections
or you can construct your own from lumber
you buy at your local home improvement store.
Just keep in mind that natural wood when
used outdoors deteriorates rapidly because
it is in contact with the ground and must
withstand the sun and wind. Therefore, unless
you want a very rustic fence, the wood you
choose must be treated to prevent rot, termites,
drying and cracking, and warping. Usually,
this is accomplished by staining or painting.
