Copper Gutters
Gutters are a necessary so that water from
rain and melting snow do not damage a house’s
structure. Most gutters are made from wood
or metals (such as aluminum or steel), and
although functional, these ordinary materials
add little to the architectural detail of
the house. If you want gutters that will
add real distinction to your property, you
should consider copper gutters. Copper gutters
and downspouts are generally more expensive,
but copper will not rot or rust and instead
develops an increasingly rich patina that
adds a sculptural dimension to any building.
If you are thinking of installing
copper
gutters, consider the following:
- You should only use an installer who is experienced
in working with copper. Coppersmiths work
with special tools and have developed particular
skills to handle many different building
requirements. For example, copper is easy
to burn (resulting in unattractive discoloration)
during installation, so many workman will
not use a torch on copper gutters.
- Your installer should wear a clean pair of
gloves whenever he handles the copper. Natural
oils from human hands will leave unattractive
spots wherever the copper is touched.
- If you are replacing or repairing your roof,
you will need to make sure
that all loose
pieces of the roofing shingle
material are
blown or swept away so that
they do not collect
in the gutter and discolor
the copper.
Since they are not painted (and thus will
not chip or peel), copper gutters themselves
need little maintenance. They do need to
be cleaned of leaves and any other obstructions
such as twigs or animal nests every autumn,
so that they will function properly in winter’s
freezing temperatures. |
