Garage Storage Cabinets
With the recent interest in remodeling garages,
manufacturers are making lines of storage
cabinets intended just for the garage. Open
metal shelving is no longer an acceptable
choice for high end houses whose owners use
the garage as their primary entrance to their
homes. Cabinets with doors can conceal the
unsightly appearance of lawn equipment, car
maintenance products, and sporting goods
acquired by the average home owner. Garage
cabinets need to be weather resistant and
durable, able to withstand moisture and temperature
extremes without warping or cracking. They
should be able to handle the occasional bump
or scrape without chipping or denting. These
cabinets are made by specialty manufacturers;
some may only be available by ordering from
catalogs or online.
If you are thinking of buying
garage storage
cabinets, consider the following:
- Cabinets made from plastic are the most readily
available and the least expensive. They usually
come with adjustable metal shelving, and
some have doors that lock. They are completely
waterproof, but they are not the best choice
for the coldest areas of the country, as
they can crack in extremely cold weather.
They may also begin to sag if it gets very
hot. Since they are not the most attractive
choice of cabinetry, they would probably
not be acceptable in very high end houses.
- Some manufacturers offer cabinets made from
melamine that are sturdy and easy to clean,
but these are not the best choice for an
unheated location. Melamine cabinets with
MDF doors and drawers are more durable. Cabinets
made with MDF and plywood are even better.
These cabinet lines often feature adjustable
plastic legs and sleek European style hardware.
They come in a variety of finishes and can
be stacked in a wide range of configurations.
Their chief drawback is that they are not
waterproof.
- Steel cabinets are the most expensive and
most durable garage storage cabinets. They
usually come with full extension drawer slides
and adjustable shelves, and they are mounted
on casters. The very best brands are made from hammered,
heavy gauge, galvanized steel
and have powder
coated exterior finishes.
Hang garage cabinets several inches above
the floor, so that it is easier to sweep
or hose down the garage floor when cleaning,
and the contents will be protected from flooding. |
