Outdoor Playhouses
What small child would not want a playhouse
in the backyard? A playhouse can provide
hours of creative fun that stimulates the
imagination. Playhouses can be custom built,
but less expensive kits that are ready to
assemble are also available at lumberyards,
home improvements centers and from online
manufacturers. Smaller types can be bought
already built and ready to be placed in the
yard or playroom.
If you are thinking of buying
a playhouse
for your child, consider the
following:
- Make sure that the playhouse is sturdy enough
for children to actually play in and around.
It needs to be strong enough for children
to climb on. Doors, windows and porches should
be firmly attached. Make sure that there
are no protruding nails and that wood walls
have no splinters. Any plastic edges should
be smooth.
- Since most playhouses will sit outside in
all kinds of weather, purchase only those
made with weatherproof materials such as
rot resistant woods (like cedar or painted
pine), plastic, or resins. Playhouses with
quality roofs made with real shingles are
best. The playhouse should sit on a treated
lumber base that will not rot.
- Playhouse kits come in a wide variety of
styles and sizes. Manufacturers
offer Victorian,
colonial, cottage style, log
cabins, castles
and many others. Small fences,
window boxes
and glass windows can be added.
Larger, more
elaborate kits will be more
expensive.
Plan ahead: you may want to buy a playhouse
that is large and sturdy so that when your
children have grown and no longer use the
playhouse, it can serve as an attractive
garden or storage shed. |
