Snow Blowers
When considering purchasing a snow blower,
there are a number of things
to consider
before deciding which model to
get. You need
to determine
- the amount of snowfall your area gets in
a typical snow storm
- the type of snow you normally receive --
is the snow light and feathery, heavy and
wet, icy or a combination of these?
- the area to be cleared using the snow blower
- any physical and/or medical limitations you
have.
Next you need to decide which
of the three
basic types of snow blowers will
meet your
needs:
- Electric snow blowers
- less expensive and usually require little
or no maintenance
- light weight and smaller so they are easier
to handle and store
- automatic starting
- good for clearing small areas such as a porch,
short driveway, patio or sidewalks within
100 feet of where you plug in the electric
cord
- works best in light snow
- Single stage gas snow blowers
- moderately priced
- clears heavier snow up to 8 inches deep in
a wider path
- clears larger areas
- often has self-propelled and/or electric
start options
- Two stage gas snow blowers
- More expensive and heavier machines with
bigger engines
- clears heavy, icy snow
- good for clearing large areas such as large
driveways and small parking
lots
When purchasing your machine, consider what
optional accessories are available for your
machine. Having a drift cutter kit, chains
to help the wheels grip the pavement, and
an extra set of shear and locking pins may
be a good investment. |
