Toilets Seats
Choosing a new toilet seat is no longer a
"one size fits all" decision. Recently,
many new models of toilet seats with additional
features have been introduced. If you are
buying a new toilet or are replacing an existing
toilet seat, consider the following:
- There are two standardized toilet seat shapes,
elongated and round. It is necessary to measure
your bowl before buying a new seat. Elongated
seats are 18 1/2 inches long; round seats
are 16 1/2 inches.
- Most toilet seats are made from either plastic
or molded wood. Plastic has a shiny look
that is easy to clean, and it lasts a long
time. Since it can scratch, it is important
not to use abrasive cleansers on plastic
seats. Wooden seats are not as durable as
plastic seats. Inexpensive wood seats will
often crack.
- Toilet seats made from a hybrid plastic are
now available. Because the hybrid plastic
is denser than regular plastic, this seat
has more strength and will last longer.
- It is important to consider the toilet seat
mounting when buying a new seat. Inexpensive
bolts and hinges will eventually cause the
seat to become lose and wiggle. Metal mountings
will rust and corrode. Plastic bolts and
bolt heads need to be hard enough so that
real pressure can be applied when mounting
the seat to the toilet. The bolt head should
have deep grooves and be hex shaped so that
a socket driver can be used. Some newer toilet
seat models have easy release hinges that
allow the seat to be removed for convenient
cleaning.
Additional features to look for include self-closing
seats that shut automatically either by
a gentle push or when the toilet is flushed.
Temperature adjustable heated seats are also
available, but these require an electrical
connection.
Lastly, toilet seats are available in a wide
range of colors. In most cases, choose a
color that matches your toilet; however,
some contrasting colors can add a new dimension
to your bathroom design. |
