Cholesterol Monitors
A home cholesterol monitor is a handy way
to keep tabs on your HDL and LDL levels.
Costing around $200, these small units read
a drop of blood on a test strip. While managing
cholesterol is usually not done as frequently
as monitoring glucose is done by diabetics,
the convenience of a home unit paired with
a physician-reviewed plan for lowering your
cholesterol boost the chances of you staying
on target.
Choosing a Model
Compare the following when choosing
a cholesterol
monitor:
- price of the unit and supplies, such as test
strips
- range of tests offered (HDL, LDL, and total;
optionally, glucose, tridlycerides
and ketones)
- test time (usually about one to three minutes)
- readability of screen
- portability
- ability to store past results
Professional models costing around
$2,000
are great for small practices.
These units
can test cholesterol and glucose
levels.
Taking only five minutes to cycle
through
a test, it can do the analysis
and print
out a copy of the results while
you conducting
other parts of the exam. Many
units print
out multiple copies of the results,
so that
your patient can take home a
copy. |
