Some lawyers are aggressively advertising
for clients who want to bring suit
over such
matters as:
- Mesothelioma (lung cancer due to asbestos)
- Asbestos exposure in general
- Slip-and-fall
- Adverse reactions to the drug Vioxx
- Vioxx heart attack
- Fen-Phen
- Insurance claim problems
- Black lung disease
- Clergy abuse
Because some cases of these types may result
in large financial settlements, there is
a strong incentive for lawyers of all backgrounds
to take on these cases. Assuming that you
have a legitimate claim in these or other
areas and feel justified in bringing suit,
you will want to make sure you pick the best
lawyer for you and your case. So, to help
you choose the right lawyer, here are some
questions that you may want to research and/or
ask directly:
- Has this lawyer had previous experience with
suits of this type?
- What is this lawyer's record of success in
this area?
- Does this lawyer have the technical expertise
to argue such a case effectively?
- Is the lawyer’s fee structure reasonable
considering the effort he needs to make to
win your case?
Finally, try to assess how honest the lawyer
is being with you. That is:
- Is the lawyer giving you a reasonable assessment
of the likelihood of success?
- Is the lawyer giving you a reasonable appraisal
of the length of time that the legal
process
will take, and of the demands on
your time?
- Can the lawyer give you a reasonable estimate
of what you might recover through
the suit?
Does this make the legal action worth
pursuing?
