All Creatures Great and Small
by James Herriot
Herriot is a master storyteller and this,
his first book, is delightful beyond words:
a funny, warm, and sometimes moving account
of his experiences as a young vet in rural
Yorkshire, England during the late 1930s.
Superficially about animals, this book really
focuses on the author's experiences with
the people of the region.
“James Herriot” is the pen name of James
Alfred Wight (1916-95). Few seasoned professional
authors ever produce a work so enjoyable,
so finely crafted, and so memorable. Thus,
this book is especially remarkable as a debut
work from someone working long hours at another
career. Published in 1972, it immediately
became a runaway bestseller and made Herriot
enormously popular with adults and children
alike. |
