the second of five books in Herriot's essential
canon. Remember that brand of snack food
whose ads dared you to eat just one? We dare
you to stop after reading just one Herriot
book. This reviewer was so completely hooked
by the first chapter of All Creatures that he devoured all five books within a
month.
The five books follow the same
format. That
is, the vast majority of chapters
are largely
self-contained short stories
of 10 pages
or less. The next three books
are, in order:

recast into illustrated children’s books
under Herriot’s supervision. Likewise, his

of appropriate chapters, as is the handsomely
