The Birds of Heaven: Travels with Cranes
by Peter Matthiessen
Personal memoirs of people traveling far
and wide in pursuit of rare birds have recently
become a distinct sub-genre of books (see
On the Wing and The Grail Bird). The Birds of Heaven was in the vanguard
of that movement and remains perhaps the
best for the general reader who has only
a passing interest in birds.
Peter Matthiessen is a prolific and award-winning
writer who is equally noted for both his
fiction and his nonfiction, including books
on nature. Unlike other examples of this
sub-genre, this author puts a lot more travelogue
into the mix (balancing the bird quest) and
takes you to much more exotic locales, such
as central Asia and Siberia. This is a highly
literate and moving work. |
