By Marie Winn
In the 1990's, a pair of Red-Tailed Hawks
took up residence in New York City, raising
their young at an elite Fifth Avenue address
across from Central Park. To this day, a
rite of spring in New York is watching the
nest for the emergence of the current year's
brood of chicks. Even people who have no
particular interest in birding get caught
up in the excitement. This is a charming
book that takes a warm-hearted look at the
urban birders of New York. Just ignore the
appendix with stats on migration (reliable,
independent observers dispute them) and recognize
that the author was very selective about
the people she chose to mention. Those are
minor quibbles about a most enjoyable work. |
