Biography, Autobiography, & Memoir
By studying other people’s lives, we gain
deeper insights into our world and into ourselves.
Biographies, autobiographies (that is, the
author's own story), and memoirs are the
perfect platform to conduct a detailed study
because the focus of the book is on the person
rather than the events.
Here are some tips on how to choose among
the countless titles available:
- Look beyond books by or about famous persons.
Some of the most worthwhile books focus on
people who are relatively obscure, yet whose
life stories are admirable, instructive,
or entertaining. Keep a lookout for these
unexpected gems.
- Get suggestions from book-loving friends.
- Seek new works by authors whose past books
you liked.
- Don’t judge a book solely by its cover. Really.
For all their supposed marketing savvy, publishers
often blunder. Sales of terrific books have
languished because of unappealing or misleading
covers. The opposite, of course, is also
true: unimpressive writing can hide behind
a sharp jacket.
- Read book reviews, and listen to book discussions
on radio and TV. Note which reviewers consistently
steer you right, and keep tabs on their current
selections.
