| Toilet cistern capacity

I have a toilet system that was installed in 1976 (a Doulton Pedigree).I want to keep the existing side outlet bowl but replace the cistern with a "low profile" dual flush one. How do I determine what capacity cistern I need? I gather if the flushing capacity isn't sufficient then the waste will not flush away.
