Most people consider the Draisienne the first
bicycle built. Invented to help
the German
Baron von Drais stroll around
his royal gardens,
the Draisienne was built of wood
with wheels
of equal size fore and aft. There
were no
pedals, and the Baron propelled
the machine
in a walking motion while straddling
and
sitting upon the contraption.
Today’s bicycles bear only a passing resemblance
to the Draisienne. Used for fun, fitness,
sport. and transportation by both adults
and children, the bicycle of today has evolved
into a wonderful combination of toy, science,
and tool.
